Lapponian Herders are basically working dogs. These obedient, calm and friendly canines are lauded for their energy and enthusiasm. When working they bark freely. They are easy to train and close to humans, due to their shepherding origins and dynamism, which make them very well suited to various sporting disciplines.

The Sami of northern Europe used dogs of the same type as Lapponian Herders to guard their reindeer for centuries. The breed was first registered in the stud book in the 1950s. At the time, the modern Lapponian Herder was regarded as the same breed as the Finish Lapphund. Lapponian Herders were recognized as a separate breed December 10, 1996. Lapponian Herders have the general appearance of a medium-sized Spitz. Their body is much longer than it is high, with strong bones and muscles, although these dogs should never appear heavy. There is a clear distinction between the sexes. The color is adapted to an arctic climate.
